Today is a very important day for the people of Madrid, we celebrate the day we pay homage to our Patron Saint, San Isidro. Apart from believing in regional traditions, we are undoubtedly influenced by the traditional dress with which we have grown up. Going out into the street and seeing all the children dressed as chulapos and chulapas gives us a special joy.
For those who have never seen the chulapa costume, it is a dress to the ankles, usually white with polka dots, ruffle at the bottom and various details of lace and bow. The hair is covered by a white scarf with a large red carnation under it, in the center. As protagonist, the big manila shawl.
But undoubtedly, my favorite is the chulapo costume, the man's costume, which I always wanted to wear as a girl. That white shirt, that beret and vest, made in black and white houndstooth, so characteristic, and finally the jacket in the same fabric. What a wealth of fabrics!
This suit was the main inspiration for our Gala jacket and pants last season. It mixes that femininity and masculinity, using houndstooth fabric.
The first name of this outfit was going to be Chulapa suit, but finally we decided to change it, with the idea of playing with the name of the fabric: houndstooth ( in Spanish is pata de gallo) became galla and from there to Gala.
On the other hand, in this summer season... the quotation marks pants could be a faithful example of how to take to pants that chulapa suit with ruffles that we described at the beginning.
There is nothing we like more than tradition and heritage, and from our small workshop, we would love to continue paying tribute to it for much longer...
